    September Call-Ups: Minnesota Twins
By Trent Cameron [August 24, 2021 at 11:40pm CST]

Tonight we look over who could potentially be called up with only one week until roster expansion. The Twins have a lot of space on their 40-man roster, but even with all that space it's doubtful that they'll call up more than four to six players.

    • C Aaron Weaver - With Mauer moving to DH it foreshadows that Weaver will be the starting catcher in 2022. Weaver will also be subject to the Rule V Draft in December, so there's no real point in not calling him up once the regular season is over.

    • 1B Marc Near - He's been up already and he's a no-brainer to give another shot. He's all but guaranteed a roster spot in 2022.

    • 1B Eduardo Monteiro - He'll certainly be added to the 40 in December, but with the other depth, he likely won't see the majors just yet.

    • 2B Jeff Kryzsko - Kryzsko has become a fan favorite, but he won't be eligible for the Rule V Draft until next year, so it looks like Opening Day 2022 would be the earliest that we'd see Kryzsko in the majors.

    • 3B Steve Richey - With trading Greg Beville away it leaves a big hole and there's some concern that despite Richey's impressive numbers that Minnesota may be rushing him a bit. He won't be subject for the Rule V Draft for awhile, so I'd say he's 50/50.

    • 3B Lucas Stevens - With the Reds adding him to the 25-man roster prior to the Williamson trade, he's forced to use an option. He's not the ideal candidate, but the Twins could do well to get their money's worth out of the option year.

    • CF Elvis Campos - He's been up in the past as is already using up an option, so it makes sense to see what he can do. He's hit 22 home runs so far and has shown improved defense.

    • RF Paul Jordan - He's re-established himself as a solid prospect with a career high 31 homers and 43 doubles to boot. He's also using up an option and I'd be surprised if he's not given a chance.

    • SP Ben Trollo - Even though he was sent down in favor of a different prospect, he still has a good shot at being recalled in a week.

    • SP Brian Siano - Despite his poor stats, he's been up before and the Twins haven't lost faith. He's considered to have high quality movement and there could be a lot of open spots come Spring Training. The Twins would be wise to give as many pitchers a shot as possible.

    • SP James Caplinger - Throw the above advice out the window for Caplinger. He hasn't impressed at all since coming over for Wes Darius. The only way I see him coming up is if the injury bug hits.

    • SP Martin Cavell - He, too, will be eligible to be selected via Rule V style, so getting a look at him might not be a bad idea. Though I think it's more likely that the other pitchers on this list get a look first.

    • RP Justin Sepulveda - See Cavell

    • RP Martin Ignatius - He's had a fine season and with already being on the 40-man roster plus the bullpen being a bit of a mess he'll likely get a chance to prove what he can do.

11:40pm - MLB Network's Gavin Nokes notes that he will answer the question submitted by futuremarlinsgm after a bit.

      12:17am - The answer to futuremarlinsgm's question:

The Twins just don't have the pieces in place to compete right now. They've only made one real big trade so far, the Greg Beville deal. Trading away Eric Williamson and Orlando Padilla isn't of much consequence. It was very unlikely that both of them would be around a few years down the road, so getting something of use was a smart move. Both of those deals have actually worked out well for both sides as Williamson and Padilla have gotten back to their expected form.

With Steve Richey nearing the majors, it was only a matter of time until Beville was traded. Being that he's traded now means that Richey could possibly be called up in September and, in the least, he'll get a long look in Spring Training. Minnesota fans have a lot to be excited about and those prospects to get excited about are on the brink of being in the majors; C Aaron Weaver, 3B Richey, SP Martin Cavell, and the reports are that even though their just a year removed from high school 2B Phil Harwood and SP Derek Ward could actually be up sometime in the near future. Breaking the majors by age 20 is a definite possibility.

Minnesota Twins August: Notes & Stats

    • Not much to report on in August. It was a dismal month, going 6-22. In September/October the Twins will look to give some of the younger players an opportunity to prove themselves. Some of the remaining veterans will still be in place, a few of those are "interviewing", if you will, to keep their 2022 roster spot.

Minnesota Twins Final: Notes & Stats

    • SS Sam Miller is looking like a young Derek Jeter ... He could stand to walk a bit more, but he doesn't strike out too terribly much and plays very good defense to make up for the lack of free passes

    • RF James Norris regrouped pretty well in the second half of the season ... He hit .259 and belted 22 of his 40 homers in the last 81 games

    • 1B Chris McNess put up defensive numbers that could vault him into Gold Glove consideration, but reduction in offensive production is a real concern ... He hit just .226 and many are concerned with his much worse plate discipline numbers

    • It's likely that the Twins will pick up the option on C Joe Mauer even though he severely showed signs of being in one of the last year's of his career ... Mauer hit only nine homers, his lowest since 2009 and failed to hit 30+ doubles for the first time in his career

    • CF Edgar Cadena struggled for most of the season, but did post a .269 average over the final 28 games

    • 2B Mark Kiger and CF Steve West aren't likely to be back in '22 ... The Twins would owe West $250K for not accepting their side of the mutual option (saying West accepts his side)

    • Young guns like C Aaron Weaver and 3B Steve Richey struggled a bit, but it was the experience, not the stats, that the Twins were concerned with these guys getting

    • SP Heath Cunicelli might have dampened his chances on returning to the Twins in the second half of the season ... His ERA was an ugly 7.14 and while walking 5.18 batters per nine in his last sixteen starts

    • A late season injury curbed SP Chris Cook's season to just 29 starts ... In what was his worst season since 2018 the Twins will hope his injury proves to be the reason for his poor showing

    • SP Harvey Sawyer still isn't quite where the Twins want him, but he dropped his ERA by 0.68 and his OBA by .025.

    • CL Paul Tignor turned in a fine season, saving 30 games with a 3.38 ERA ... However, it's up in the air if he'll be re-signed with his current asking price of $6 Million

    Dissecting The Battery

To wrap the season up we'll be going over; The Battery (Catchers and Starters), The Infield, The Outfield, and The Bullpen. We'll go over who's staying, who's going, and what the future holds. We hope this will give Twins fans an idea of the organization is striving for in 2022 and beyond.

    • C Joe Mauer: Mauer is just 47 hits away from 3,000, but his days of being the Twins regular catcher are likely over. He'll likely enter '22 as the DH, but if he can't hit better, much better, than his .614 OPS this past season he won't be in the lineup past hit 47 hits.

    • C Aaron Weaver: He surely didn't show well in September, but it's his Triple-A numbers that the Twins are more concerned with. Weaver hit .280 with 30 dingers while playing very solid defense. He'll be the starter entering 2022, but it's likely that he'll endure some more struggles as he's always struck out a lot.

    • C Gary Spector: He's up for Arbitration and he runs the risk of being non-tendered. While he calls a solid game behind the plate, his arm is fairly weak. He's also been pretty ineffective for the past two seasons at the plate. If he's retained, if can thank his experience.

    • C Chris Darusmont: Darusmont was fairly impressive in his time in the majors. After Mauer moved to DH, he and Spector shared the catching duties. In 22 games he hit .243 and was pretty impressive behind the plate, throwing out 10 of 20 base stealers.

    • SP Chris Cook: After putting up back-to-back strong seasons and showing encouraging signs of progressing Cook took a step back in '21. The Twins are hoping the late discovery to an ankle injury proves to be the reason for the poor showing.

    • SP Harvey Sawyer: He still isn't where the Twins want him, but he improved vastly and has bought himself another season in the organization.

    • SP Heath Cunicelli: His late season struggles were documented in the Final Notes & Stats article. He's about a month shy of becoming arbitration eligible, so he'll have to perform better in 2022 to have a rotation spot in '23.

    • SP Matt Durkin: Durkin is very doubtful to be back in Minnesota next season. He's turned in a fine career with 190 wins and a 3.85 ERA, but he'll likely have to sign elsewhere in order to pursue 200 wins.

    • SP Ben Trollo: He still can't seem to figure it out in the majors. He's still young (will only be 24 in 2022), but the Twins might be wise to shop him this off-season and see if a fresh start can help Trollo.

    • SP Nick Davis: Davis has been roughed up too, but he only has a career 35.2 innings logged. He'll likely fight for one of the long relief bullpen spots in the spring.

    • SP Brian Siano: He showed some good and some bad this September. He'll likely get one of the bullpen spots and could battle for one of the last rotation spots as well.

    Dissecting The The Infield

To wrap the season up we'll be going over; The Battery (Catchers and Starters), The Infield, The Outfield, and The Bullpen. We'll go over who's staying, who's going, and what the future holds. We hope this will give Twins fans an idea of the organization is striving for in 2022 and beyond.

    • 1B Chris McNees: After a Rookie of the Year season in 2020, McNees showed the inability to put the ball in play and often struck out. Scouts all said that he has Adam Dunn home run potential, but he's only hit 47 homers in two full seasons. He'll have to show much better next season or the Twins could look to move the high risk McNees.

    • 1B Eric Filler: He cooled off after a very hot start and ended up with the expected numbers. He has 20-25 home run potential and should be a solid DH for the Twins next season.

    • 1B Marc Near: Near hit .240 (12 of 50) with 2 homers last season. His ability to play the corner outfield spots as well make him a prime candidate for a bench job.

    • 1B Eduardo Monteiro: Monteiro will likely be added to the 40-man roster this December after a nice showing in New Britain. He hit .263 with an .857 OPS. He should develop pretty good power with very good plate discipline.

    • 2B Mark Kiger: After getting his 2,000th hit Kiger was essentially done as a Twin. By that time in the season he was really showing his age and the young guys were given a chance to shine.

    • 2B Samuel Fernandez: He was given the majority chance to play at second base late in the season and he didn't rise to the occasion. Fernandez hit only .144 in September and can likely kiss the starting job good bye in '22.

    • 2B Jeff Kryzsko: Fan favorite Kryzsko is the likely place holder for Phil Harwood at second base. Kryzsko hit .277 and turned in a .990 Fielding % in Triple-A during 2021.

    • 3B Mike Jameson: Jameson will likely only be issued arbitration because of his slick fielding. He shouldn't cost the Twins much, but the sub-Mendoza line batting average has to hurt.

    • 3B Steve Richey: He's hit well at every level so far and while he didn't put up eye-popping stats in September, he did enough to have the Twins convinced that he's ready.

    • 3B Lucas Stevens: The one thing troubling the Twins management is the fact that he takes up a 40-man roster spot. Because the Reds called him up they're forced to leave him there or risk losing him if DFA'd. Don't be surprised if he's dealt the winter.

    • SS Sam Miller: Miller really blossomed late in the season as he slugged .453 over the last two months. His final OPS was only .753, but he getting better with every game and supplies Gold Glove defense.

    Dissecting The The Outfield

To wrap the season up we'll be going over; The Battery (Catchers and Starters), The Infield, The Outfield, and The Bullpen. We'll go over who's staying, who's going, and what the future holds. We hope this will give Twins fans an idea of the organization is striving for in 2022 and beyond.

    • LF James Norris: Considering how his season started out, Norris turned in some impressive numbers. He was able to notch 40 homers and an .805 OPS. Not bad for hitting .171 with a .568 OPS during the first two months.

    • CF Steve West: He'll be owed $250,000 is his team option isn't picked up, but I can't see how the Twins retain him with his .310 OBP.

    • CF Edgar Cadena: 2022 was rough for Cadena, but he did save some face with his play in September and his error-less defense helps as well.

    • CF Elvis Campos: Pending on who's retained Campos could be looking at a bench spot out of Spring Training. Offensively he's a lot like Cadena, but he's only average defensively.

    • RF Noah Turmell: Turmell played as expected and the Twins will do all in their power to retain the .783 OPS hitter.

    • RF Jimmy Queen: He only got 19 plate appearances this season and with his questionable defense your guess is as good as mine on if he'll be offered arbitration.

    • RF Paul Jordan: Jordan was rewarded for his patience and perseverance as a minor leaguer with getting three starts to close out the season. With his power he'll battle for a bench job in the spring.

    Dissecting The The Bullpen

To wrap the season up we'll be going over; The Battery (Catchers and Starters), The Infield, The Outfield, and The Bullpen. We'll go over who's staying, who's going, and what the future holds. We hope this will give Twins fans an idea of the organization is striving for in 2022 and beyond.

    • RP Paul Tignor: Tignor turned in possibly his best season as a pro with a 3.38 ERA, .215 OBA, and converting on 30 Saves. All sources suggest he wants to hit the Free Agent market.

    • RP Tim Raymond: When his contract was purchased from the minors by Portland he had it worked in that after three years he would become Free Agent eligible instead of Arbitration eligible. Raymond has strong ties to GM Matty Nokes and is good friends with Heath Cunicelli, so I'd be shocked if he opted for Free Agency.

    • RP Ryan Wagner: This is two straight seasons that he's put up poor numbers for the Twins. With some younger guys on their way up, Wagner will be on his way out.

    • RP Kenny Bliss: Bliss started out of call-up with very promising success, but stumbled big time down the stretch. The good news for him is that the Twins likely won't be winning next season, so he should get a chance to improve.

    • RP Brian Kovanda: He was hit-or-miss in 2021 and some scouts fear he'll always been that way. Like with Bliss, he'll get a shot to prove himself in '22.

    • RP Justin Sepulveda: He's a dime a dozen reliever, but depending on how the Twins go about replacing the vacancies left by Wanger and Tignor, he could wind up on the roster.

    • RP Martin Ingatius: He appeared in a few games in September, but with his ceiling higher than anyone else on this list he'll likely start the season back in Rochester where he'll get the chance to play in a bigger role.

    Minnesota Twins: Re-Signing Breakdown
By Trent Cameron [November 11, 2021 at 11:30pm CST]

A few years back Major League Baseball decided to scrap the old re-signing process that had specific, different, days in which clubs had to tender contracts to potential free agents, arbitration eligible players, and players with conditional options. This new process, where everything must submitted eight days after the World Series, is much easier for teams, but can be a bit confusing for fans.

Then there's the question of, "how this player x get so much while player y didn't get near that amount with relatively the same stats?" or "why was player z released?" We'll try to answer those questions and critique the signings.

    • Free Agency Eligible
2B Mark Kiger: Granted Free Agency

RF Noah Turmell: Signed $7.25M/3 Years

SP Matt Durkin: Granted Free Agency

RP Paul Tignor: Granted Free Agency

RP Tim Raymond: Signed $1.50M/1 Year

RP Ryan Wagner: Granted Free Agency

The players going to Free Agency is no surprise. Minnesota would have liked to have retained Tignor, but Tignor likely wouldn't have negotiated until Free Agency and they surely didn't want him at his asking price. Turmell doesn't post the most eye pleasing stats, but he's a reliable player to play in at least 150 games and he does many things right that don't show up in the stat column. Raymond returns as the Setup Man at a reasonable price.

    • Conditional Option
C Joe Mauer: Exercised $3.75M Team Option for 2022

CF Steve West: West Exercised Mutual Option, Twins Decline, Awarded $0.25M Buyout

More no-brainers here. West didn't hit or get on base and the Twins want to see Mauer accomplish 3,000 hits in the only uniform that he's known.

    • Arbitration Eligible
      C Gary Spector: Non-Tendered Arbitration

2B Samuel Fernandez: Offered $0.40M in Arbitration, Fernandez won for $500K

3B Mike Jameson: Avoided Arbitration, Signed $550K/1 Year

SS Sam Miller: Offered $7.00M in Arbitration, Twins won

LF James Norris: Offered $6.75M in Arbitration, Twins won

      RF Jimmy Queen: Non-Tendered Arbitration

SP Harvey Sawyer: Offered $4.00M in Arbitration, Twins won

The only arbitration case that the Twins lost on was with Fernandez and that was only for an additional $100,000. The big controversy is that James Norris received less than Sam Miller while putting up better numbers. I think the fact that Miller plays Short Stop and is very skilled in the field is what raised his price over Norris'. If Norris gets back to his 2020 numbers, he should make more than Miller in 2023. Jimmy Queen getting non-tendered isn't much of a surprise, but some wonder why a veteran catcher like Spector wasn't retained. The Twins like Chris Darusmont as their backup and didn't want to give a guaranteed contract to a Triple-A ball player. It's possible that if Sepctor would receive a minor league that he could re-join the team.

    Twins Off-Season Needs

As the Twins embark on the off-season fans should remember that this is a rebuilding process, so it's unlikely that they'll be very active in the off-season markets. However they do have a few needs and we'll touch on where we think they should improve upon.

    • Free Agency Market

Starting Pitcher - It's surprising that the A's let SP Macay McBride go and even more surprised that McBride wouldn't accept less to stay with a team where he's found most all of his success at. Atlanta's SP and 2020 Cy Young Award winner, Joe Drew is also surprising. Drew only started in eight games this past season, making most of his appearances out of long relief. It's quite confusing really. But then again at 80, Bobby Cox has been reported to choose his lineup and starting pitcher by drawing cards out of a ball cap. The two guys are likely over the Twins' heads and they'll probably have better success in the trade market.

Closer - San Diego's Joe Sussman is the top reliever available, but his $8M+ price tag will likely deter the Twins. Former Angels Closer Mike Haines is available as well, but Minnesota might be better off looking at an older veteran like Rafael Soriano. Soriano has bounced around as a starter and reliever during his career. GM Matty Nokes has shown that he favors players that he's familiar with and Soriano pitched for Portland from 2016-17.

Second Base - In all likeliness Jeff Kryzsko will be handed the starting job, but Nokes wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't at least look at other options. Dennis Lopez, who was explored last off-season, is once again a free agent. Lopez did fail to hit 20 or more home runs for the first time in four seasons, but the potential is still there. He could come at a decent cost of under $5 million.

    • Amateur Draft
I hate to look at "needs" for a baseball draft since the impact isn't instant like it would be in football or basketball, but Minnesota is still lacking minor league depth at certain positions. There doesn't seem to be many well-rounded players in this year's draft. The Twins could still use even more pitching and they don't have a concrete solution at center field. There's also the question on if Noah Turmell can be considered a long-term solution in right field. Here's a look at some of the potential first round draftees:

RF Simon Holz (65/100) - Age 20: Holz has slightly, slightly above average power, but has below average contract with a slightly below average eye (low walks, normal strikeouts). He is a decent athlete with slightly above average speed and range. He's an excellent fielder with an average arm. Scouts feel he'll develop some nice pop, but there are some concerns about his contact/on-base ability.

3B Preston Darius (61/100) - Age 18: Darius has scouts drooling with his hitting potential, but plugging their nose about his defense. He has average contact and power with slightly above average plate discipline (just under average walks, normal strikeouts). To say Darius is a poor defender is an understatement. He's a good athlete, but it just hasn't translated in the field.

RF Gary West (67/96) - Age 17: Even graded by scouts as a bit lower than Holz, West might actually be a better fit for the Twins. He's more well-rounded and has more time to smooth out the problem areas. He has below average contact, but average power and plate discipline (normal walks and strikeouts). Scouts rave about his plus, plus power and on-base potential. His defense is slightly below average at this point, but with his athleticism he can play all three spots and scouts feel he has the time to work on his fielding abilities.

SP Bob Walters (74/95) - Age 18: Walters is one of the best pitchers regardless of level in this draft. He already features elite control and should be able to strike out a fair number of major league hitters with his above average power. His big downfall is the fact that his stamina isn't the greatest. He can start, but he's still below average in that department. His movement is also below average at this point.

RP Louis Buchanan (71/92) - Age 18: With the successful conversion of Josh Murphey to a starter, the Twins will likely consider the 'tweener Buchanan as a potential starter as well. He'll have to build up his poor endurance, but he posses average control with above average power. He has the ability and will need to work on his secondary pitches as they are far from pretty, they're quite poor actually.

So, who would you take #2 overall?

I would need to see all of their talent ratings, as well as their health ratings, which is probably the first thing I look at.

Twins Make Surprise Move, Sign Drew
By Trent Cameron [November 15, 2021 at 5:10pm CST]

In a shocking development that seemed to happen just like that, MLB.com's Kelly Thesier reports that the Twins have signed starting pitcher Joe Drew. Inexplicably Drew was removed from the Braves' rotation after a Cy Young season in 2020 and he demanded a huge $12 million dollar salary in his first arbitration eligible season. The Braves balked at the asking price and he hit the free agent market.

Twins officials say GM Matty Nokes was surprised to see Drew interested and released this about the signing:
"When a young, up-and-coming starter hit the market practically all other 23 teams will kick the tires. I honestly didn't think we had a shot. When I contacted his agent he said the Twins were on the list of teams in high interest. I asked what it would take to get a deal done right now and I was quoted with a price. Apparently, as the agent later explained, Mr. Drew was impressed with our rebuild efforts. He's a fan of Chris Cook and hopes they can be a dynamic one-two combo and growing up he said his childhood dream was to have Joe Mauer catch for him."

The addition of Drew should take some of the stress off of the aforementioned Cook. Drew is an innings eater (238.2 in 2020) and really limits his home runs allowed with a 0.77 HR/9 career mark. He signs with the Twins for $38 million over four years. It's a bold move for Minnesota and Drew to make, but it could be one huge step in the right direction. Oh, and I think we know who will be penciled in at "Position #2" on Opening Day...
